Budgets

A budget is a total, a date window, and the money you already know you need to set aside. Months, trips, and events use the same system.

Budget types

  • Month - usually named for the calendar month. Starter set-aside bills can come from the space’s default bills, or be configured custom just for each month.
  • Trip - a date range plus presets such as trip out, return trip, and perhaps a fancy resturant meal or something you want to do at the end of the trip.
  • Event - a short window with focused set-asides (venue, food, outfits, gifts).

Savings goals are separate. They do not count as a budget. See Savings.

Create one

From Home or Budgets choose a new month, trip, or event. Set:

  • A name people will recognize.
  • Start and end dates.
  • The total you planned - this is either your regular income, or for a trip or event the money you set aside for that.
  • Set-asides (bills on a month; gas and lodging on a trip).
  • If you want to set the Today's pace by day or by week.

What is left after set-asides is Everyday money. That is what Today’s pace is built from.

Default bills

On Manage space, owners and co-managers can save default bills for a new month (rent, groceries, and so on). The next month you create starts with those names and amounts. You can still edit them on that month and add custom ones just for that month.

Edit, release, close

  • Edit - owners and co-managers can change totals, dates, and set-asides on an open budget. Members can add expenses or remove their activity.
  • Release leftover - when a set-aside is done under budget, release it so the unused amount returns to Everyday money and the daily number goes up.
  • Close - owners and co-managers can close a budget. The daily number becomes zero and the screen shows leftover or overage. Closed months do not use an active-budget slot.

If a month ends with leftover, you can move that leftover into a savings goal instead of leaving it on the closed month.

Who sees what

Everyone in the space sees the same budgets. Viewers can open them but cannot create or add spend. Free spaces cap how many budgets can stay active at once; joining someone else’s space uses their plan cap, it does not count toward yours.
